I’m talking about how most of us spiritual entrepreneurs have given sales a misguided bad rap. We want to make a difference in the world but we hate the idea that selling our services is what it takes to get those gifts to the world.

This is what I call the Divinely-Broke Sales Dilemma.

The belief that making money (through sales) and helping others can’t go hand in hand. 

It’s what keeps many healers, coaches, therapists, ministers, holistic practitioners, and other spiritual entrepreneurs from making the impact they truly want in the world.

In a nutshell, I changed the way I viewed the sales process. I began viewing it less as an imposition, and more of a conversation.

I started to view the sales process as an art of connection – of courting (and even seduction) – and the start of a deeply rich, Divinely-intimate, relationship with my clients.

I started to view it as something profoundly sacred, and well, something quite sexy.[/text_block]

Here’s my definition of a sacred sales conversation:

1.  A rich, intimate, and connected conversation where you ask deep questions which help your potential client get very clear on what they want and what’s stopping them from having it.

VERB

2.  It is a conversation where, once they are clear about what their next action is… then they step into a space of possibility with you.

3.  It is a conversation where they become deeply enrolled in themselves and their possibility – so much so that they take action for themselves.

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left”]Can you imagine what might happen if you  viewed your sales experiences as a fun, courting process… one that begins with mutual interest in one another and ultimately ends up where both parties leave the experience feeling connected to one another, connected to possibility and even connected to the Divine?[/text_block]
[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left”]Think about it: when you first meet someone, you don’t immediately try to “seal the deal” or “jump their bones,” do you?  If you do, it feels sleazy, disingenuous, and…wrong.  It feels gross.

And you don’t want someone doing that to you either.

This means that you pay attention to the other person. It means that you find out what who they really are and you listen to their dreams.  It means you see if there’s something in common.

You see if there is a fit.

This is where the courting – and connecting – truly begins.[/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left”]When you’re ready to go to the next level with someone, it happens because you’re in sync.

It happens because you’re paying attention.

It happens because you’re a part of their world.

Sales is the same way.  It can’t be forced.  It can’t be manufactured.  It has to take place at a pace that is comfortable. If you push too soon, you break the connection.  Or, if you become too afraid to ask, you never go anywhere.

 

When you’re so focused on what you need or want, instead of focusing on helping and serving another, you break the connection.[/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left”]Whether you’re making sales or making love, it’s the same thing.

 

The process gets derailed when you get distracted, afraid or anxious.

 

When you’re not focused on the other person.

When you’re not focused on what’s important.

Most of the time it’s our own fault. We get too timid. We get too afraid or too worried we’ll upset the other person with our questions.  Or we get too aggressive (which is just another form of fear).[/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left”]Bottom line:  When this happens it’s because we aren’t really paying attention to what’s going on for the other person because we’re so focused on ourselves.

And that’s a big no-no.

 

Because when you need the sale, when you need the client … you’re coming from a place of trying to get something.  You’re coming from a place of lack and desperation. And your potential client can feel that energy a mile away!

 

You see, every conversation is different, just like every relationship is different.  You can’t be focused on what worked last time with someone you were with intimately and you can’t rely on what worked last time during a sales conversation.

 

That’s why there’s no such thing as a templated approach to teaching sales. You can tell, can’t you, the difference between someone who is just reading a script someone who is fully present with you? So can your prospective clients.  One of the greatest gifts you can give someone in a sales conversation (or in life) is to be fully present with them.[/text_block]

Selling only loses its spiritual component when you come from a place that isn’t spiritual. If you’re really here to make a difference to the people who need your help, then your sales can’t be anything but spiritual. In fact, I would even say it’s decidedly NOT SPIRITUAL to NOT sell.

The truth is that any endeavor involves some form of sale. Whether it’s asking your teenager to clean up his room, or whether it’s asking people to volunteer to help with a project, you are inviting them to “buy-into” your idea.

Once you stop focusing on selling as something you do TO people and instead see it as something you do FOR them, you’ll discover that selling takes on a whole different energy – and a whole different experience – for you and for your prospective client.

When you understand that sales are a step-by-step process, the frustration will wane. Significantly.

Sales can be very frustrating.  Especially when you don’t understand how to do them and haven’t found much success.  And especially when you’re more focused on your fear than on your prospective client.  You may also have been raised to believe that sales people are not to be trusted (which is likely part of the reason you may have bought into the idea that it’s ok to be broke as long as you’re doing spiritual work.  You know it’s not, right?).

Sales are only sleazy when you make them to be sleazy.

So, here’s the thing with that… Have you ever bought something? Do you think it’s sleazy when the organic food market sells you produce? How about when your chiropractor asks you to pay for your appointment?  You see, I think sales are only sleazy when the person selling to you chooses to approach it with a sleazy mindset. And that does happen, but it doesn’t have to be you doing it.

You’re not pushing.  You’re offering.

There’s a big difference.  They don’t have to say yes.  (And we’ll cover how to handle it when they don’t.) Let your prospective client be responsible for their decisions and for their experience of you.  You be responsible for your intention.

That will happen over time. But you’ve got to help them know about you first.

Everyone wants that, right? But imagine if everyone behaved like that. No one would ever buy anything because no one would know someone’s services or products exist.

Same with you: how can people even know they need to come to you (especially in the beginning years of your business) if you don’t put yourself out there and let them know you’ve got something to offer?

 It’s not about you.

Feeling rejected when someone says no is normal.  But the truth is you feel rejection when you make it about you. When you recognize that you are the Divine channel that you are, and that your sacred work flows through you from the Divine, you’ll realize that the offer you make is not about you at all.

When they say no, they aren’t saying no to you, they are saying no to the Divine. 

They are saying no to the transformation they themselves say they want.

They are choosing to stay in their fear instead of stepping out in their faith.

 

I feel foolish asking for money. I’m scared to ask for money!

Honor your gifts and others will honor them, too.

I understand this.  I used to feel this way, too.  But I learned that my gifts are too sacred to hide under a bushel and that my gifts, just like yours, are worthy of compensation. Unless you treat them as the Divine gifts they are, how can you expect someone else to?

Think about it:  we value what we pay for.  If you don’t ask for money, you are not declaring your value.  In addition, we teach others how to treat us.  When we give our gifts away because we are too afraid to ask for money, then we are teaching others that we don’t value our gifts.

How will you ever stay in business (or start in business for that matter) if you don’t ask?  How can you make money?  You need money to get your gifts to the world.  It’s time to get over that fear, don’t you think?

That’s where I come in. Sales are sacred, deep, rich, intimate. 

Your interpretation and experience of sales depends on you. You can sell by manipulation or you can sell by connection and inspiration. I always believe that we should be the change we want to see in the world.

Some people believe that sex is manipulation. It can be and there are those who do it that way.  But there are also those who connect deeply and passionately – they make love.

Sales is the same thing.  You get to choose who you are being in the experience.  Manipulator or connector?  It’s up to you.

Imagine a world where you could sell to the people who not only needed what you had to offer but also gladly paid you for it and thanked you for it afterwards!  (It does exist, and you can create that world for yourself.)
